You could shout at the top of your lungs into a microphone but unless it is written down, you can never be sure that it will be very loud. Because even though today you could have it recorded, anyone who will get that recording can adjust the volume. Spoken word can be so easily forgotten unless it is written down.
No shout or spoken word has the same immortality of anything written. So many great things may have been said. Things which were a thousand times as great as Thomas More's Utopia or Dante's Divine comedy. So many words lost in the sands of time, lost because they were never put to paper.
The words which were? They are so loud they transcend the limits space and infiltrate time and as a result, more people can hear them. More people than those who heard the unsoiled words of Jesus Christ before the Gospels were written and selected and filtered. If Christ had written his lessons down instead of trusting men fifty years later to do so, the word would be very different.
Words spoken first, printed later can not even touch the volume of words immediately copied from minds of the writer.
Thousands of abolitionist speakers had gone around preaching against slavery decades before actual action was taken. It was only when Harriet Beecher Stowe penned Uncle Tom's Cabin that things truly were set in motion.
No one can turn down the volume of a book. They can close it, but hearing it only comes with one volume.
Why is this?
Perhaps it is that other saying that "Actions Speak Louder than Words." This is a true saying. So perhaps the reason the written word is loud is that it is not just words but action as well. Because the author not only is saying something, but they took the time and effort to put the words down. Writing is acting and talking at the same time. Other art forms are this way, but there is one key difference when it comes to scribbling: You can't manipulate the duality of the artistry when writing. You can't just speak and you can't just act. You HAVE to do both. with other art forms, you can do one or the other. Not with writing.
Writing can be preserved like nothing else. There are words which reach your ears from perhaps mile away. But to read something is the ability to have words reach you from years ago.
Without it, the world is an evil, stupid, ignorant and intolerant place. It was only when the ability to read became available to the masses that the human race progressed.
The louder you scream, the less I hear.
